GIẢI SAMPLE WRITING TASK 2 – Living Standard – Social Value

Topic: Most countries want to improve the standard of living through economic development, however, others think social value is lost as a result. Do you think the advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages?

Introduction: refer to the task question, using paraphrasing. My own opinion – the advantages are more significant.

Body Paragraph #1: the disadvantages of economic expansion (1) can undermine the cultural value of a tourist destination -> commercialising local tradition and heritage. Example: traditional products being replaced by mass souvenirs for a quicker return on investment.

Body Paragraph #2: advantages of economic advancement  (1) raising living standards -> more jobs (2) parents can invest in children’s education more -> can preserve and pass on social values

Conclusion: this trend may bring some minor negative consequences to social value; however, as a whole, the benefits that economic development creates for a nation are far greater than the drawbacks.

One of the most hotly debated issues in contemporary society is that most nations want to boost living standards through economic progress, which is believed to result in the deterioration of heritage values.  In my opinion, the advantages of this trend are more significant compared to the downsides.

It is unarguable that improving living conditions through economic expansion would cause several disadvantages. To elaborate, the commercialisation of culture created by the increase in cross-border tourism can undermine the cultural values, the essence of a tourist destination. Local traditions that have rich cultural heritage are reduced to wearing costumes and putting on acts for the tourists in return for money. For instance, traditional handcrafted products in some mountainous areas in Vietnam are now reduced in variety and authenticity, focusing mostly on mass-produced souvenirs like keychains and simple jewellery so as to make a quicker return on investment.

On the contrary, I argue that the advantages of this trend would prove to be worthwhile. If national economic development is up to the mark, the living standards would be improved subsequently and may help offset any undesired loss of social values. At the same time, the availability and quality of jobs can be raised as a result of improved economic conditions. With a heightened economic status, parents can invest in their children’s higher education and extracurricular activities, thus strengthening their sense of cultural values. For instance, with an increased income, Vietnamese parents can now afford to send their children to summer or scout camps where they can learn and practice social skills, which paves the way to creating newer, more contemporary social values

To conclude, this trend may bring some minor negative consequences to social value; however, as a whole, the benefits that economic development creates for a nation are far greater than the drawbacks. We should still be aware and preserve our tradition and social values at the same time contributing to our countries’ economy.
