Stepping into the 21st century, there has been increasing concern regarding students’ concentration at school. It is believed that many students these days find it difficult to pay attention in class. Old-fashioned teaching methods and the distractions caused by technology are the main reasons for this. This issue could be effectively handled by updating the teaching methods as well as restricting irrelevant websites at school.
To begin with, the primary cause of this problem is the obsolete school curriculum and pedagogy method. Some students may not be sufficiently motivated to learn certain subjects hence they would be less committed to those classes. Usually, learners find it daunting and dull since they do not understand the point of learning those subjects. For example, it would be a pain if art students are forced to study irrelevant subjects like Maths or Physics since those subjects do not enhance their knowledge of the field they are going to pursue. Moreover, since we are living in the information age, students are easily distracted by social media or other applications on their personal devices. Since most students today are hooked to short videos and social media posts, it would be difficult for them to grasp the complex ideas of lengthy lectures and extended readings.
On a small scale, individuals can partially fix these problems through sheer determination, but schools must play an active role in wider transformation. The most simple yet effective measure is to ban smartphones at school and block their access to social media or entertaining websites on the school network. Another approach schools may take is to renovate their curriculum to accommodate for students’ short attention spans. Instead of creating a passive learning environment that has resulted in generations of daydreaming pupils, lessons could be shorter and contain more engagement to encourage learning. Moreover, schools should allow students to choose their own subjects that they find beneficial and interesting, thus, this will enhance their studying process and improve their attitude towards learning.
In conclusion, the primary factors that pose the lack of attention from students come from outdated teaching methods and the overuse of social media. To mitigate this problem, schools should provide restrictions on mobile phone usage and update the curriculum to improve pupils’ learning progress.
